A Comparison of Cultural Elements in English Teaching Textbooks for Middle School Students among Korea, Japan and India
초록
영어
The aim of this study is to compare cultural elements in English teaching textbooks for third grade middle school students among Korea, Japan, and India. The culture and reading sections of thirteen Korean, three Japanese, and two Indian English textbooks are analyzed. The results of the analysis are as follows: First, the Indian ESL (English as a Second Language) textbooks present more diverse countries than the Korean and Japanese EFL (English as a Foreign Language) textbooks. Second, the Indian ESL textbooks show a balanced proportion of cultural contents between ‘Big C’ and ‘small c’, whereas the EFL textbooks mainly contain contents relating to ‘small c’. Third, the EFL textbooks show a high percentage of Caucasians and the gender ratio in the ESL textbooks is unbalanced. The findings suggest that to amend the weaknesses of cultural elements in the Korean textbooks, English instructors need to teach the cultures of numerous countries and to handle cultural contents and races in a balanced way. Materials writers should develop more culturally balanced textbooks for Korean middle school students.
