This study is a research on historical background and liturgical theology of the Pyeongyang Great Revival Movement of 1907, from a Presbyterian perspective. In order to explore the context or background of it, this paper closely examines the early Korean Presbyterian Worship. The early Korean Presbyterian worship was influenced by the Manchurian Church which baptized the first four Koreans in 1879, and the mission method of John Nevius, which emphasizes self-support, self-propagation, and self- government of the mission church. From this information, several characteristics of early Korean Worship in relation to Pyeongyang Great Revival Movement can be shown, such as: Sakyounghoe [Bible Class System], worship initiatives of native layperson, and extempore prayers of the worshipers. This paper also explores the development of the Korean traditional christian liturgies, including Tongsung Kido [audible prayer], Saebyuk Kido [dawn prayer meetings], and Chulya Kido [all night prayer meetings]. After studying early Korean worship, this research will examine the liturgical theology of early Korean missionaries who had been influenced by Pietism, Revivalism, and Presbyterian New School. Finally, this study will analyze the overall liturgical meaning of the Pyeongyang Great Revival Movement.

본 논문은 1907년 평양대부흥운동의 역사적 배경과 예배신학에 대한 고찰이다. 평양대부흥운동의 배경을 연구하기위하여, 먼저 본 논문은 초기 한국장로교회의 예배를 보다 세밀히 연구한다. 초기 한국장로교회의 예배는 1879년에 네 명의 한국인이 최초로 세례를 받았던 만주교회와 선교지 교회의 자립, 자전, 그리고 자치를 주장하였던 네비어스의 선교방법론에 많은 영향을 받았다. 본 연구는 이러한 과정을 통하여, 초기 한국교회의 몇 가지 특징들이―예를 들어 사경회, 평신도의 예배인도, 예배자의 즉흥기도와 같은―평양대부흥운동과 연관되어 있음을 밝힌다. 더 나아가서 본 연구는 새벽기도, 통성기도 그리고 철야기도회와 같은 한국 교회의 토착적 예배형식들이 어떻게 발전되어 왔는지에 대해서 연구한다. 본 연구의 후반부에서는 한국에 들어온 초기 선교사들의 예배신학이 경건주의와 부흥운동, 그리고 장로교 신파의 영향을 받은 것임을 밝힌다. 마지막 으로, 본 연구는 평양 대부흥운동의 예배적 의미가 무엇인지를 분석한다.
