The Effect of Job Stress on Job Satisfaction among Government Employees

Purpose : This study aimed to investigate job stress and job satisfaction among government employees and to determine how job stress affected job satisfaction among them. Methods : The research was a crosssectional, descriptive study. Data collection was done using self-report questionnaires with 328 employees at 3 public enterprises located in Seoul and Gyeongin Province. Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics, t-test, ANOVA, multiple regression analysis by using SPSS 18.0. Results : The results showed that the respondents got the mean of 45.50 out of 100 for job stress and 57.69 out of 100 for job satisfaction. The respondents' general and job-related characteristics had no significant effect on job satisfaction, whereas such sub-factors of job stress as job demand (p=.033), job insecurity (p=.002), organizational system (p= .001), and lack of reward (p=.001) were found to affect job satisfaction. Conclusion : Controlling job stress among public company employees is the most important factor in improving job satisfaction. To improve job satisfaction, therefore, it is necessary to make a plan that can reduce job stress caused by job demand, job insecurity, organizational system, and lack of reward.
