As the technology development of enterprises is becoming more and more intense, the amount of patents is growing rapidly. Various patent indexes have been developed and used to evaluate the quality of patents as well as the quantity of patents, but it is difficult to assess the overall level of patents. The purpose of this study is to evaluate the level of patents held by companies by using principal component analysis (PCA) so that various aspects of patents should be measured objectively. We appraised the patent competitiveness of major 129 Korean companies analyzing patent information such as patent index values by PCA. Through this, companies can grasp the level of their patents compared to competitors in the same industry, and the government will be able to utilize them in establishing nationwide technology policies.

기업의 기술개발은 날로 치열해지고 그에 따른 특허의 양도 급속히 늘고 있다. 특허의 양뿐만 아니라 특허의 품질을 평가하기 위해서 다양한 특허지표가 개발되어 사용되고 있으나 특허의 종합적인 수준을 평가하기에는 어려움이 있다. 본 연구는 특허의 다양한 측면을 동시에 객관적 으로 측정하기 위해 주성분분석을 이용해서 기업이 보유하고 있는 특허수준을 평가하고자 하였 다. 특허지표값과 같은 특허정보 수집이 가능한 129개 기업의 특허를 주성분분석으로 평가하여 우리나라 주요기업의 특허 경쟁력을 살펴보았다. 이를 통해 기업의 경우는 같은 업종에 있는 경 쟁사와 비교하여 자사의 특허수준을 파악할 수 있으며, 정부는 국가 기술정책 수립에 활용할 수 있을 것이다.
