Writing education has a long history within the general education curriculum in US colleges and universities. Nevertheless, an influential study shows that about half of all university students fail to demonstrate competent writing skills. In this study, I examine the writing curricula of some US universities that belong to different categories, and try to figure out how US universities are attempting to cope with the problem. I do so by employing various approaches in liberal education, such as writing across the curriculum, writing intensive courses, and writing to learn courses. For I believe this analysis can be applied to Korean higher education as well, wherein writing education is minimally reflected in its own curriculum. Furthermore, I propose that universities in Korea will also benefit greatly by introducing various forms of WAC(writing across the curriculum).

미국 대학의 교양 교육과정에서 글쓰기 교육은 오랜 전통을 가지고 있으며, 그 필요성에 대해서도 폭넓은 사회적 공감대가 형성되어 있다. 그럼에도 글쓰기 교육은 물론 기초교육 전반의 효과성에 대해서 꾸준히 의문이 제기되어 왔다. 미국 대학의 글쓰기 교육의 현황과 문제를 짚어보고, 최근 그러한 문제 해결을 위해 어떠한 노력과 접근방법이 제시되고 실행되어 왔는지에 대해 살펴본다. 그 과정에서 대학 유형별로 몇몇 대학의 글쓰기 교육과정을 분석해보고, 전공연계글쓰기(WAC), 글쓰기집중교과목(WI), 학습연계글쓰기(WTL) 등의 다양한 시도에 대해 검토해 본다. 미국 대학의 사정을 분석해 봄으로써 여전히 충분치 않은 한국 대학의 글쓰기 교육의 현실에 대해서 되짚어 보고, 현상태의 문제를 보완하고 글쓰기 교육이 효과적으로 운영될 수 있도록 다양한 형태의 전공연계글쓰기의 도입을 제안한다.
