This paper aims at investigating the affect of Irish postmemory generation reflected in Cathal Black’s docudrama Learning Gravity. In tracing the life and memory of Thomas Lynch, an Irish American poet and funeral director, back to the Great Famine, Black reveals the characteristics of Lynch’s postmemory in three ways. First, Black shows Lynch’s desire for Irish American identity as a postmemory generation, irreducible to Irish nationalist ideology, through his narrative construction based upon his reflection on his family photographs. Black also expresses Lynch’s aspiration to the poetic truth in combining realistic documentary style with a sense of poetic time. Finally, Black renders Lynch’s melancholy emanating from his status as a postmemory generation entangled with a sense of tension between presence and absence, represented in the images of nature and objects deserted. The Irish identity, the poetic truth, and the sense of melancholy constitute Lynch’s affect of Irish postmemory generation.
