In this study, the aspects and meanings of the male chastity narratives in , and were examined. The male chastity narratives can be divided into 3 aspects according to the 'causes of faithfulness'. First, ‘faithfulness by filial affection’ is the case of maintaining faithfulness by the filial affection, which means that one must obey the parents’ orders, and that is the case with Yoo, Gon-ok in . Second, ‘faithfulness by a guilty conscience’ is a case in which a man who has committed a big mistake to a woman maintains faithfulness to expiate, and that is the case with Jin, Chang-hyun in . Third, ‘faithfulness by pure love(純愛)’ is a case of the utmost love for a woman, and that is the case with Yoo, Yeon in and Jeong, Yoon in . The meanings through the above aspect analysis can be largely organized in 3 aspects. First, one aspect shows an advanced consciousness that chastity is not an exclusive property of women only. Second, another aspect represents the self-reflection of males on the unreasonable chastity notion. Third, the other aspect embodies a male image that projects the illusion fantasies and desires of contemporary females. By comparing them with the narratives on female chastity, this study will be effective in understanding the general aspects on chastity narratives in the classic novels. Also, it has the significance in that it investigates the statuses and values on the male chastity narratives in the context of the novel history.

본고는 <해당향>, <효의정충예행록>, <서해무릉기>에 나타난 남성 정절 서사의 양상과 의미를 고찰하였다. 남성 정절 서사는 ‘수절의 원인’에 따라 세 양상으로 나눌 수 있다. 첫 번째 ‘효성심에 의한 수절’은 부모의 명령을 반드시 지켜야 한다는 효심에 의해 수절하는 경우로, <해당향>의 유곤옥이 해당한다. 두 번째 ‘죄책감에 의한 수절’은 여성에게 큰 잘못을 저지른 남성이 속죄하기 위해 수절하는 경우로, <효의정충예행록>의 진창현이 해당한다. 세 번째 ‘純愛에 의한 수절’은 한 여성에 대한 지극한 사랑의 마음으로 인해 수절하는 경우로, <서해무릉기>의 유연과 <효의정충예행록>의 정윤이 해당한다. 이상의 양상 분석을 통해 도출된 의미는 크게 세 가지로 정리할 수 있다. 첫째, 정절이 여성의 전유물이 아니라는 선진적인 의식을 보여준다. 둘째, 불합리한 정절 관념에 대한 남성들의 자기반성의 모습을 나타낸다. 셋째, 당대 여성들의 환상 및 열망이 투영된 남성상을 구현한다. 본 논의는 여성 정절 서사와의 비교 대상으로써, 고전소설 속 정절 서사의 전반적인 양상을 파악하는 데 유효할 것이다. 또한 소설사적 맥락 속에서 남성 정절 서사가 차지하는 위상과 가치를 고구하였다는 데 의의가 있다.
