영어

This essay explores Jean-Paul Sartre’s No Exit in terms of his theory of the other’s “look” by focusing on the relationships among Garcin, Inez, and Estelle. According to Sartre’s theory, the other affects my body as being-for-itself, and my being is objectified by the “look” of the other. Thus, to Sartre, other people are Hell; however, at the same time, “the other is the indispensable mediator between myself and me.” In addition, this essay deals with Bentham’s Panopticon and the way of producing “docile bodies” in Michel Foucault’s Discipline and Punish. According to Foucault, the Panopticon is defined as a mechanism of power over the prisoners’ bodies in which docile bodies are produced by being constantly observed by an inspector. In this context, the integration of Foucault’s studies and Sartre’s discussion of the other’s “look” and the body allows us to reinterpret the dynamic relationships among the three characters in No Exit and to find the conflictual nature of interpersonal relationships in the play. In doing so, this essay identifies the interrelationship between Sartre and Foucault, both of whom deal with the “look” and the body.
