The coronavirus pandemic, known as Covid-19, has a profound influence on every aspect of our life. In this situation, it is meaningful to revisit the literature that dealt with past experience of infectious diseases, which is similar to the current Covid-19 pandemic. This article analyzes W. H. Hudson’s Ralph Herne that featured an epidemic of yellow fever in Argentina in 1871. In the text, Hudson points to the environmental pollution of Buenos Aires in the era of first globalization as the cause of the spread of yellow fever. It honors those who bravely fought against yellow fever by depicting the devoted activities of an English doctor named Ralph Herne. Hudson, who was critical of european civilization and development, understands the yellow fever as Mother Nature's fury from the perspective of pseudoenvironmentalism. Still, Hudson does not lean toward fatalism. This attitude shows his belief that human beings have developed by overcoming such obstacles as epidemic or pandemic.
