This study aims to come up with a plan to provide support for foreign teachers' adjustment to universities and administrative procedures, research, and teaching, because South Korean universities' support for foreign teachers is viewed as insufficient despite the increase in their number. To this end, this study conducted a questionnaire survey of ten foreign teachers employed by ’A’ university in the country and investigated the perception and experience of foreign teachers by employing narrative research with six of them who consented to an in-depth interview. The collected data were analyzed through the first step of transcription, the second step of topic-specific categorization and analysis, and the third step of comparison of responses from the participants. The study got the following results. First, as far as their adjustment to universities and administrative procedures is concerned, language issues occurred in the sharing of the administrative information delivered to the members of the university and its website. This highlights the need to create a system that would immediately enable the support for adjustment to university life and administrative procedures by providing a handbook that can promote an understanding of how to use the university's system and holding talks and establishing mentoring between fellow foreigners and domestic university staff. Second, as far as research is concerned, the revealed demand for guidance to specialty-customized research information and support programs highlights the need to actively provide relevant information. Lastly, as far as teaching is concerned, the survey which found that no teaching-related support was available for foreign teachers illuminated the need to support class design and latest teaching method as operated at the teaching centers of different colleges, as was available for domestic teachers. This study took its cue from the fact that even though South Korean universities continued to hire foreign teachers in step with their upgrade in globalization, the research to support the improvement of their work performance remained insufficient. This study is significant, in that it explored a basic plan for diversified supports for application to different South Korean universities.

본 연구는 국내 대학에 소속된 외국인 교원의 양적 확대가 이루어졌음에도 불구하고 대학 차원 에서 이루어지는 외국인 교원 지원 미흡을 인식함에 따라 이들을 위한 대학적응 및 행정, 연구 활 동, 교수(teaching) 영역에 대한 지원방안 도출을 목적으로 이루어졌다. 이에 본 연구에서는 국내 A 대학교에 재직 중인 외국인 교원 10명을 대상으로 설문조사를 하였으며 심층 면담에 동의한 6 명을 대상으로 내러티브 연구방법을 사용하여 이들의 인식과 경험을 조사하였다. 수집한 자료는 1 차 전사, 2차 주제별 내용 구분 및 분석, 3차 참여자 응답 간 비교를 통해 분석되었다. 이에 따른 연구결과는 다음과 같다. 첫째, 대학 및 행정 적응에서는 대학 구성원을 대상으로 전달되는 행정 정보 공유 및 교내 사이트의 측면에서 언어적 문제점이 발생하고 있는 것으로 나타났다. 이에 소 속 대학의 시스템 활용 이해를 도모할 수 있는 핸드북을 제공하고 동료 외국인 교원과 내국인 교 원과의 간담회 및 멘토링을 통해 대학 생활 및 행정 영역 지원이 즉각적으로 이루어질 수 있는 체계 구축이 필요하다. 둘째, 연구 활동 영역의 경우 전공 분야에 맞춘 연구 정보 및 지원제도 안 내에 대한 요구가 있는 것으로 나타나 이에 대한 정보를 적극적으로 제공하는 것이 필요한 것으 로 나타났다. 마지막으로 강의 및 교육활동에서는 외국인 교원을 대상으로 한 교수지원이 이루어 지지 않고 있는 것으로 조사되어 내국인 교원과 마찬가지로 각 대학의 교수학습센터에서 운영하 는 수업설계 및 최신 교수법 지원의 필요성이 도출되었다. 본 연구는 국내 대학의 외국인 교원임 용이 지속적으로 이루어지고 있음에도 불구하고 이들을 위한 직무수행 능력 향상 지원 관련 연구 가 부족한 현실을 기반으로 이루어졌다. 이에 대학 차원에서 활용할 수 있는 다각적인 지원 방향 의 기초 방안을 모색하였다는 점에 본 연구의 의의가 있다.
