Foucault's ‘hétérotopie’ is usually discussed in connection with ‘utopia’. This is, above all, because Foucault himself introduces ‘utopia’ into the definition of the concept ‘hétérotopie’, and also because of the historical situation in which the utopian hopes and interests are bound to continue. For these reasons, Foucault's ‘hétérotopie’ is often used under a utopian perspective that implies the denial and resistance to reality, and the possibility of criticism and alternatives. However, Foucault did not provide a dictionary definition for this concept, but only showed various examples. Taking these examples as clues and reconstructing its meaning, we can see that such a utopian vision is not impossible, but unexpectedly, a meaning contrary to that vision is also implied. This is because the cases of hétérotopie have the moments of denial and criticism, and, at the same time, are the places where the oppression and the controlling are carried out. Foucault's hétérotopie is just a 'place' where the resistance, the oppression, and the other elements cross intricately, and not a concept that makes only the possibility of emancipation optimistic in a new way. Furthermore, Foucault opens up the possibility that hétérotopie can exist anytime, anywhere, and that new forms of it can occur suddenly. Noteworthy is that hétérotopie has a characteristic dependent on the subject who creates or leads this place. This indicates that there is no place that completely guarantees freedom, and that the emancipatory conversion of these places depends on the subject(utopus). Through this, the spatial discourse called ‘heterotopia’ is transformed into the discourse about the subject(-tification). The utopian imagination that identified the subject(-ification) and the space created by him touches the heterotopia at this point.

푸코의 ‘헤테로토피아’는 대개 ‘유토피아’와 연관되어 논의된다. 이는 무엇보다 푸코 자 신이 이 개념의 규정에 ‘유토피아’를 끌어들이고 있기 때문이고, 아울러 ‘유토피아’적 희망과 관심이 지속될 수밖에 없는 역사적 상황 때문이기도 하다. 이로 인해 푸코의 헤테로토피아 개념은 현실에 대한 부정과 저항, 비판과 대안의 여지를 함축하는 유토피아적 전망 하에서 자주 원용되곤 한다. 하지만 푸코는 이 개념에 대한 사전적 정의를 제시하지 않았으며, 다양 한 사례들을 보여주었을 따름이다. 이 사례들을 실마리로 삼아 그 의미를 재구성해보면, 그 와 같은 유토피아적 전망이 불가능하지 않지만, 뜻밖에도 그러한 전망에 반하는 의미 또한 함축됨을 알 수 있다. 헤테로토피아의 사례들은 부정과 비판의 계기를 지님과 동시에 억압 과 통제가 관철되는 장소들이기 때문이다. 푸코의 헤테로피아는 저항과 억압, 그밖에 다양한 계기들이 복잡하게 교차하는 ‘장소’일 뿐이며, 해방적 가능성만을 새로운 방식으로 낙관하게 하는 개념이 아니다. 나아가 푸코는 헤테로토피아가 언제, 어디에나 존재할 수 있으며 새롭게 돌출될 수 가능성 또한 열어 둔다. 주목할 부분은 헤테로토피아가 이 장소를 창출하거나 향유하는 주체에 의존적인 특성을 갖 는다는 점이다. 이는 자유를 완전하게 보장하는 장소란 따로 없으며, 이 장소들의 해방적 전환이 주체(우토푸스)에 달려 있음을 말해준다. 이를 통해 헤테로토피아라는 공간 담론은 다시 주체(화)에 관한 담론으로 전환된다. 나아가 주체(화)와 그에 의해 창출된 공간을 동일 시했던 유토피아적 상상은 바로 이 지점에서 헤테로토피아에 가닿는다.
