The purpose of this study was to examine the impact of psychological Inflexibility and family connectedness on suicidal behavior by using the 2014 survey data on community dwelling old adults living in a small and medium-sized city. Based on reviews of previous studies, we hypothesized that psychological Inflexibility would significantly affect suicidal behavior, and that family connectedness would play a moderating role in the relationship. Data on demographic and physical health variables, depressive symptoms, suicidal behavior, psychological inflexibility, and family connectedness were collected from 2,034 elderly people aged 65 years and over. Depressive symptoms, psychological inflexibility, and the number of chronic diseases were significantly positively correlated with suicidal behavior, whereas family connectedness was significantly negatively correlated with suicidal behavior. Hierarchical multiple regression analyses showed that psychological inflexibility was a significant predictor of suicidal behavior after controlling for gender, age, education, living arrangement, poverty, chronic disease, depressive symptoms, and family connectedness. Moreover, the impact of psychological inflexibility on suicide behavior was found to be stronger at the low level of family connectedness than at its high level. The results indicate that psychological inflexibility contributes significantly to suicidal behavior, and that this impact is moderated by family connectedness. Moreover, the findings suggest the importance of enhancing psychological flexibility and family connectedness for preventing suicidal behaviors of community dwelling old adults.

본 연구는 2014년 지방소재 중소도시 노인생활 실태조사 자료를 이용하여 지역사회에 거주하는 노인들의 심리적 유연성 부족과 가족연대감이 자살행동에 미치는 영향을 검증하고자 하였다. 선행연구들에 대한 리 뷰를 기초로, 노인의 심리적 유연성 부족이 자살행동에 유의미하게 영향을 미칠 것이라는 가설과, 가족연 대감이 이러한 관계에서 중재(조절)역할을 할 것이라는 가설을 세웠다. 65세 이상의 노인 2,034명을 대상으 로 수집된 인구통계학적 및 신체건강 변인, 우울증상, 자살행동, 심리적 유연성 부족, 그리고 가족연대감에 관한 자료를 분석에 활용하였다. 상관분석 결과, 우울증상, 심리적 유연성 부족 및 만성질환 수는 자살행동 과 유의미한 정적 상관을, 그리고 가족연대감은 자살행동 수준과 유의미한 부적 상관을 보였다. 위계적인 중다회귀분석 결과, 성별, 연령, 학력, 가구형태, 빈곤, 만성질환의 수, 우울증상 및 가족연대감의 영향을 모 두 통제한 후에도, 노인의 심리적 유연성 부족이 자살행동을 예측하는데 있어 유의미하게 기여하였다. 아 울러, 자살행동에 대한 심리적 유연성 부족의 영향은 가족연대감 수준이 높을 때보다 낮을 때에 더 강한 것으로 밝혀졌다. 이러한 결과들은 지역사회에 거주하는 노인들의 심리적 유연성 부족은 자살행동에 중요 하게 기여하며, 이러한 영향은 가족연대감 수준에 의해 중재됨을 나타낸다. 나아가, 지역사회 거주 노인들 의 자살을 효과적으로 예방하기 위해서는 그들의 심리적 유연성과 가족연대감 수준을 증진하는데 초점을 맞추는 것이 중요함을 시사한다.
