This research is on the life and achievements of Lee Chai Wuk,1) the first director of the National Library of Korea, focusing on the Munheon Boguk (文獻報國), Library of Japanese Government Gerneral of Korea’s2) publication. According to the research result, Lee Chai Wuk is the first library director appointed as a professional librarian in Korea and had many achievements as a scholar of various fields and library director. After graduating Keijō Imperial University in 1931, Lee was hired by the Library of Japanese Government General of Korea and appointed as a librarian in 1939, he is recognized as the librarian who published the first library science book Rural Library Management (published in 1935). According to the analysis for 38 articles included in Munheon Boguk, bibliography fields account for 58% (22 articles) of the material. The research explores his achievements as bibliographer and national library director. This research is meaningful as it is the first study on Lee Chai Wuk, the Kore’s first professional library director, and I hope this will be used as basic study on related research.

본 연구는 조선총독부도서관 기관지 『문헌보국(文獻報國)』을 중심으로 국립도서관 초대 관장 이재욱(李在郁) 의 생애와 업적을 연구한 것이다. 연구 결과, 이재욱은 우리나라 최초의 사서 출신 관장으로 다양한 분야의 학자이자 도서관 최고경영자로서 많은 업적을 남겼음을 확인하였다. 이재욱은 1931년 경성제대 졸업 후 조선총독부도서관 촉탁(囑託)으로 들어와 1939년 사서로 임명되었으며, 『농촌도서관의 경영법』(1935년) 발간을 통해 최초의 도서관학 전문서적을 발간한 사서로 자리매김할 수 있다. 또한, 『문헌보국』에 수록된 총 38편의 저술 분석 결과 서지학 분야의 저술이 58%(22편)를 차지하는 등 서지학자 로서의 업적과 함께 1945년 10월부터 1950년 7월 납북되기까지 국립도서관 관장으로서 그가 이룩한 업적에 대해서도 고찰하였다. 본 연구는 그동안 한 번도 조명되지 못했던 우리나라 최초의 사서 출신 전문가 관장으로서의 이재욱이라는 인물에 대해 처음 연구한 논고로서 의의가 있으며, 향후 심층적인 연구를 수행할 수 있는 기초자료로 활용되기 를 기대한다.
