This paper tries to deal with the concept of ‘moralische energie’, which was widely circulated in Japan during the wartime. This phrase, which has been borrowed from the concept of LANKE, has so far only interpreted as totalitarianism to build a moral world against Western hegemony. However, throughout the Overcoming Modernity’ Symposium(1941~1942), the concept of ‘moralische energie’ has been used in various ways like “healthy life force,” “healthy morality,” “fresh life force,” “healthy life feeling,” “national life force,” “healthy life force,” “healthy life’s counterattack” and so on. In this various ways, “life” or “health” are used together with “morality”. If so, we should put an emphasize on the concept of “life” rather than “morality”. This paper tries to examine the two questions; Why this translated word came to be used with the concept of life, and by doing so what they were trying to say? By answering these questions, this paper would like to approach the reality of the so󰠏called “overcoming modernity” discourse.

본 논문은 전간기 일본에서 많이 회자되었던 ‘모랄리세 에네르기’(moralische energie)라는 개념에 대해서 다루고자 한다. ‘도의적 생명력’으로 번역되는 이 말은 원래 랑케의 개념에서 가져온 말이었다. 지금까지는 ‘모랄리세 에네르기’에 대해서 ‘도의적’ 측면에만 한정해 근대초극론을 해석해왔다. 즉 서양의 패권적 지배에 대항해 일본은 도의적 세계를 건설하겠다는 명분 속에서만 읽어온 것이다. 하지만 이 말이 <세계사적 입장과 일본>의 좌담회 내내 ‘건강한 생명력(健康な生命力)’, ‘건강한 도의감(健康な道義感)’, ‘신선한 생명력(新鮮な生命力)’, ‘건강한 생활감정(健康な生活感情)’ ‘민족의 생명력(民族の生命力)’ ‘건강한 생명의 반격(健康な生命の反撃)’ 등으로 변주되면서 보다 다양하게 ‘생명’, ‘건강’과 같은 개념과 함께 쓰이고 있다고 할 때 오히려 주목해야 할 것은 ‘도의’라기보다 ‘생명’일지 모른다. 그렇다면 ‘도의적 생명력’에서 생명이 의미하는 바를 살펴볼 필요가 있다. 본 논문은 왜 이 말이 생명과 함께 쓰이게 되었는지, 그리고 이 때 생명을 말하면서 그들이 말하고자 했던 바는 무엇일지를 살펴보고자 한다. 이를 통해 이른바 근대초극론의 잡히지 않는 실체에 접근해 보고자 한다.
