초록

영어

Yosa(寮舍), Monk’s Dormitory of the temple is the space for monks who support and spread Buddhism. Therefore, it reflects the monks’ practice, faith, and daily life. In addition, the composition and types of Yosa vary according to their specific characteristics and uses. This paper examines the Buddhist paintings of the late Joseon Dynasty that were enshrined in the common space, Seongdang(僧堂), Nojeon(爐殿), the space of the monks who prepare and manage Buddhist rituals, and Josil(祖室), the space of old monks. The origin of the Buddhist paintings at Yosa in the temple can be found in Jetavānānāthapiadasyārāma(祇園精舍), the Buddhist temple in India. The paintings were painted on the shrine, the nursing room, the bathroom and toilet, the warehouse, etc. In Korea, paintings of Amitabha Buddha, Avalokitesvara Bodhisattva, and the Monk Dharma were enshrined in various shrines during the Silla and Goryeo period. Based on the records of the Buddhist paintings, among the existing Buddhist paintings in the late Joseon Dynasty, Yosa paintings are about 60 cases. The temple Yosa of the late Joseon Dynasty were mainly enshrined on Amitabha Buddha, Avalokitesvara Bodhisattva, the Guardians, Hyeonwang, Hwajangchalhae Painting, Dharma, and the Solitary Saint. Most of these were produced as the Wonbulhwa, that is, the paintings for personal wishes of the monks. This can be understood as reflecting his duty as a practitioner and his wish for the rebirth of Buddhist Western Paradise.
