This study examines the seas of Kyushu by distinguishing the north and south waters of Kyushu. First, it talks about the Goto Islands and Japanese missions to Tang China, especially with focus on the Fukue Island (福江島), which is the biggest of the Goto Islands and is located in the southeastern most part. Moreover, this study examines the Nansei Islands stretched out in a long arc in the southeast of Kyushu and the East China Sea (東支那海) surrounding these islands. It also explores the significance of interchange with the East Asian world including ancient Japan through the sea routes of the Goto Islands and Nansei Islands that are the north and south of Kyushu. As a result, we can analyze the East Asian world that had not been receiving much attention in the past from the outside in a new perspective. Furthermore, this study on the sea routes of the Goto Islands and Nansei Islands can extend the research accomplishments that had been focused on land. There was an imbalance in examining the members of the East Asian world with focus on land. In contrast, looking at this world from the sea implies that they could seek mutual exchange in equal positions.

여기서는 九州의 바다를 중심으로 특히 九州의 북쪽과 남쪽의 해역을 분별 하여 논을 전개한다. 우선 오도열도와 견당사에 대해서 다룰 것이다. 특히 오 도열도 중의 가장 큰 섬이며 가장 남동쪽에 위치한 후쿠에시마(福江島)를 중 심으로 언급한다. 그리고 규슈의 남동쪽에 활모양으로 길게 뻗어있는 남서제 도와 이 제도를 감싸고 있는 동지나해(東支那海)에 대해 살펴볼 것이다. 나아 가 규슈의 북쪽과 남쪽에 해당하는 오도열도와 남서제도의 바닷길들을 통한 고대일본을 포함한 동아시아세계와의 교류가 갖는 의미에 대해 살펴본다. 그 결과 종래에 별로 주목받지 못했던 동아시아세계의 바깥쪽으로부터의 시점에 대해 새로운 관점에서 살펴볼 수 있다. 나아가 이번 오도열도와 남서 제도를 대상으로 하는 바닷길에 관한 연구는 종래의 육지 중심의 연구 성과를 확장시킬 수 있다. 이는 종래의 동아시아세계의 구성원들을 육지 중심으로 보고자 했을 때는 비균형적 만남이 컸었다. 이에 비해, 동아시아세계를 해역 측에서 바라보자면 상대적으로 대등한 입장에서 상호 교류를 추구했다고 할 수 있을 것이다.
