This paper analyzes the implications of Cultural Heritage Studies, an interdisciplinary field of study, on the development of cultural heritage discourse and the changing scope of cultural heritage studies. In order to comprehend the development of Cultural Heritage Studies, we set off with a review of cultural heritage programs around the world by regions and periods. Then we examine cultural heritage-related academic literature published between the 1950s in which the academic works on cultural heritage started and the year 2006, which marked the watershed of cultural heritage studies. Finally, this paper investigates the characteristics of Critical Heritage Studies that branched off as an independent subfield in the mid-2000s to deal with certain subcategories of cultural heritage issues such as indigenous heritage, slave heritage, and gender heritage.

이 논문은 문화유산 연구의 담론 발전 및 지형도 변화를 통해 융복합 학문인 ‘문화유산학’ 을 고찰하고자 한다. 문화유산학의 구체적인 발전 상황을 파악하기 위하여, 전 세계 문화유산 관련 학과를 지역별 시대별로 분석하였다. 그리고 문화유산 연구의 흐름을 파악하기 위해, 문화유산 연구가 본격적으로 시작된 1950년대부터 문화유산학 연구의 분수령이 되는 2006년까지 문화유산 관련 책 출판 경향성을 정리하였다. 또한 2000년대 중반부터 독립 학제로 분류된 비판문화유산학의 특징을 살펴보고, 비판문화유산학 세부 분야인 원주민 문화유산(indigenous heritage), 노예 문화유산(slavery heritage), 젠더 문화유산(gender heritage)을 통하여 문화유산학의 현재성을 파악하였다.
