The greatest trait of Tibetan Buddhism is the ideology of Yogacara and Madhyamaka, developed by combining epstmological logic that was taken as the theoretical background of the Buddhist practice system, which the framework of the staged practice system is clearly established. After the Council of Samye, the Tibetan Buddhist system has been developed based on the ancient Indian Buddhist philosophy education system. That was the basis of philosophy system needed to achieve practice, which were matured by supporting the tantra practice. Tibetan Sangha education has continued the tradition of the University of Nālandā, the Buddhist master of ancient India. And in Tibet, the Buddhist ideological system and logic were further developed and established intact within the practice system. The Tibetan Sangha University has the 17 years curriculum that confers a “Geshe” equivalent to a Ph.D. degree in Buddhist philosophy of a general university. Lately, a new “Geshema” degree also has started to be awarded to the Tibetan nuns, who are supported by the Tibetan Nuns Project. By looking at the teaching system of the Tibetan Sangha University, this paper would like to the suggest complementary point of our Sangha University curriculum.

티베트불교의 가장 큰 특질은 논리학과 접목하여 발달한 유식(唯識)과 중관(中觀)사상을 수행체계의 이론적 배경으로 하여, 단계적인 수행체계의 틀을 일목요연하게 세운 점이다. 삼예 논쟁 이후, 티베트의 승가 교육체계는 고대인도 불교철학 교육체계를 기준으로 하여 발달해 왔으며, 이는 수행의 성취라는 열매를 맺을 수 있게 하는 사상체계의 바탕이 되었다. 티베트 승가교육은 고대인도의 불교대승원인 날란다(Nālandā)대학의 전통을 이어서, 티베트 내에서 불교 사상체계와 논리학을 더욱 발전시키고, 이를 수행체계 안에 고스란히 자리 잡게 하였다. 즉 티베트에서 논리학과 맞물려 발달한 유식과 중관사상은 밀교(딴뜨라)의 수행체계를 숙성시키는 사상체계가 되었다. 이 글에서는 고대 날란다 대학의 전통과 수행체계에서 인식론적 접근의 중요성과 이를 바탕에 둔 티베트 승가대학의 교과과정을 겔룩빠 중심으로 살펴볼 예정이다. 이는 일반대학의 불교철학박사 학위에 해당하는 ‘게쉐’를 수여하는 교과과정이다. 최근, 니승(尼僧)들에게도 ‘게쉐마’ 학위를 수여하기 시작했다. 인도에서 체계를 갖추고 있는 티베트 니(尼)승가대학들의 교과과정과 그 현황도 알아본다. 이렇게 체계적인 수행의 틀이 되는 티베트 승가대학의 교학 체계를 살핌으로써, 우리 승가대학 교과과정의 보완점을 찾아보고자 한다.
