In this paper, I will study the thought and practice of Jogye Jong phrase-observing meditation centering on the representative organization and persons. In chapter two, I study on a part of Seonwoncheonggyu, which emphasizes spontaneously appearing gong-an and interprets the meaning of bocheong widely. In chaper three, I study on the thought of Hyobong, Gusan and Sengcheol. Hyobong emphasizes to practice three practices, that is moral discipline, meditative concentration and wisdom. At the same time Hyobong give a weight to practice meditative concentration and wisdom and even father he presents to enter into meditative concentration and to focus hwadu(key phrase) in detail. Gusan succeeds the thought of Hyobong and raises Bojo. And Gusan says to practice improving oneself and bringing benefit to others as seven pāramitā. Seongcheol insists that to see the buddha-nature is perfect enlightenment and from that point of view Seongcheol criticizes the thought of Bojo. But on the other hand Seongcheol admits the skillful means and says to choose practice method according to the ability of practitioner. I think that we can make a basic to practice three practices among the thought of Hyobong, in addition can add to the thought Gusan and Seongcheol.

이 글에서는 조계종 간화선의 사상과 수행에 대해 대표적 단체와 대표적 인물을 중심으로 해서 접근한다. Ⅱ장에서는 전국선원수좌회에서 발행한 『선원청규』의 일부 내용을 검토하였다. 이 책에서는 화두수행에서 ‘현성공안’을 강조하고 있고, ‘보청’의 의미를 확대해석하고 있다. Ⅲ장에서는 효봉, 구산, 성철의 사상을 살펴보고 필자의 관점에서 종합하고자 하였다. 효봉은 계율, 선정, 지혜의 삼학을 닦을 것을 강조한다. 그러면서도 효봉은 그 가운데 선정과 지혜를 함께 닦는 것에 비중을 두고, 구체적 내용으로 선정에 들어가서 화두를 참구하는 것을 제시한다. 또 효봉은 시대를 3시기로 구분하고, 그 가운데 하세(下世)를 대표하는 승려로서 보조를 거론한다. 구산은 효봉의 사상을 계승하면서 보조를 선양한다. 또 구산은 7번째 바라밀로서 자리이타의 행위를 실천할 것을 말한다. 성철은 견성은 완전한 깨달음을 의미한다고 주장하고, 그 관점에서 보조의 사상을 비판한다. 그렇지만 한편으로 성철은 방편을 인정하고 사람의 능력에 따라 수행법을 선택해야 한다고 말한다. 필자는 효봉의 사상 가운데 삼학을 닦는 것을 기본으로 하고, 그 위에 구산과 성철의 사상을 추가할 수 있다고 생각한다.
