The purpose of this study is to grasp the concept of arete for athletes, with focus on Aristotle's philosophical idea, thereby proposing the ethical theoretical reference of sports. According to Aristotle, there are largely four types of athletes' arete. First, physical arete comprises fitness, aesthetics (beauty), strength, magnitude, and athletic ability. Second, athletes' physical arete is always in a state dynamis, for the renewal of a record turns into dynamis for a new record at the next competition. Third, intellectual arete requires experience and time, and moral arete is formed as a result of habits. Intellectual arete and moral arete are manifested as a result of training and habits since childhood. That is, an excellent athlete requires continued excellent behaviors. Fourth, the most ideal athlete is one with excellent skills and excellent moral character.
