This study is on the actual situation and activity analysis of 14 Shogunate attendants in the Nagasaki “Navy” training(1855-1859). This topic has been highly evaluated for its historical significance in terms of beginning of Japanese modernization work, but empirical research is insufficient compared to the weight mentioned. The present study has secured the significance and differentiation of research history by using many new unpublished materials. A thorough analysis revealed that. The significance of participating in the Nagasaki training for the dispatched individuals was one aspect of creating a career advancement. For example, Sano Kanae(佐野鼎) established his career in Nagasaki and was employed as a gunnery instructor of the Kaga domain. Sato Yonosuke(佐藤与之助) was also highly praised for his efforts in “Rangaku training” for five years in Nagasaki, and was recommended as a Translator of Dutch books for the warship training center. Nagasaki Yugaku was evaluated favorably at the time of his employment in Nagasaki, which was the most advanced place to offer superior training on new technologies, rather than the form of regular and non-regular training.

막부 말기 막부의 대표적인 개항 개혁 정책의 하나였던 나가사키 ‘해군’ 전습은 네덜란드 교관을 나가사키로 초빙하여 약 3년 반(1855.11~1859.3) 동안 시행되었다. 일본 근대화 작업의 효시라는 측면에서 역사적 의의가 높게 평가되어 왔는데, 언급 되는 비중에 비하면 실증적인 연구는 불충분한 편이다. 본고에서는 특히 실태 규명 이 미진했던 이른바 ‘청강생’의 한 부류인 막부 정식 참가자의 수행원 사례에 포커 스를 맞추어 그들의 실제 학습실태와 그 의미를 밝히고자 하였다. 특히 새로운 미간 행 사료들을 대거 활용함으로써 연구사적 의의와 차별성을 두었다. 이러한 문제의식을 토대로 참가자들의 학습 실상을 최대한 구체적으로 구현하였 다. 수행원 대부분의 경우 기본적으로는 비정규생인 채로 다양한 공부모임 속에 ‘청 강생’으로 참여하거나 또는 노트를 빌려 필사하는 형태의 간접적인 학습 경험이 주 된 실상이었다. 그럼에도 불구하고 당시로서는 최첨단의 ‘선진학문’을 접할 수 있었던 나가사키 유학 경험은 그 자체로 참가자 개인에게 ‘캐리어 업’의 찬스를 제공했다. 예를 들면, 사노 카나에(佐野鼎)는 나가사키 체재 경험이 평가를 받아 가가번(加賀藩)의 포술사 범으로 취직할 수 있었다. 또한 사토 요노스케(佐藤与之助) 역시 나가사키에서 5년 간 ‘난학수행(蘭学修行)’에 힘쓴 점이 평가되어 군함조련소에서 번역 업무를 돕는 직책을 맡게 되었던 것이다.
