The purpose of this study is to explore the expansiveness of the horizon of thinking inherent in Donghak, and at the same time examine the unique meaning of each sphere of thinking. First, we discuss the process and meaning of Donghak as a religious character. Next, it deals with the leading values of the times inherent in Donghak. The contents of this study were as follows. First, the religious nature of Donghak means that the science of Donghak has been extended to doctrine. This included an important character of the expansion of the horizon of thinking. Second, the religious nature of Donghak emphasized understanding and practicing the concept of truth. Third, Donghak, as the leading value of the times, provided alternative thoughts and practical actions to recognize and solve the problems of the times. Fourth, the leading value of Donghak in the times was related to the core value of the future society of communication and coexistence.

이 연구의 목적은 동학사상에 내재한 사유 영역의 확장성을 탐색하고, 동시에 각 사유 영역이 지닌 고유한 의미를 살펴본다. 먼저, 동학이 종교로 발전하는 과정과 의미를 논한다. 다음으로, 동학사상에 내재한 시대적 선도가치를 다룬다. 이 연구의 내용은 다음과 같았다. 첫째, 동학의 종교성은 동학이라는 학(學)을 교(敎)라는 성격을 지닌 하나의 가르침으로 정립하고 확장했다는 의미를 지니며, 이는 곧 사유 영역의 확장성이라는 중요한 성격을 포함하고 있었다. 둘째, 동학의 종교성은 시천주 개념을 이해하는 데에서 그치지 않고, 실천하는 행위의 중요성을 강조하여 지행합일(知行合一)을 강조했다. 셋째, 동학은 시대적 선도가치로서 그 시대의 문제를 인식하여 해결하는 대안적 사유와 실천 행위를 제공했다. 넷째, 동학의 시대적 선도가치는 소통과 공존이라는 미래사회의 중점 가치와 연관되어 있었다.
