This article has tried to explain the relational dynamics among the three participants of pastoral counseling, the counselee, the pastoral counselor, and the God who actively participates in the process of pastoral counseling. Pastoral counseling is characterized by the trialogue occurring among the three parties. Modern pastoral counseling has begun from its concern for people's relationship with God, but gradually adopting psychological perspectives and methods in its practice, it has lost much of its original concern for the spiritual dimension of pastoral care. In an effort to reactivate the concern for the spiritual dimension of pastoral care, this study has tried to explain the empathy, the selfobject transference, and the transmuting internalization that occur not only between the counselee and the counselor but also between God and those two persons. From the perspective of secular psychology, it might sound somewhat awkward to apply psychological concepts to God's intervention in pastoral counseling. However, I believe it is possible and even necessary to explain the relational dynamics between God and us human beings in psychological terms, because God reveals himself to us in such human levels that we could experience and understand him within us. God's empathy and selfobject function are the ways in which he heals and transforms his people and reveals who he is in the process of pastoral counseling. The pastoral counselor is God's agent who cooperates with God and bears witness to God through his or her participation in God's work for the counselee. Through actual examples of pastoral counseling, this study has tried to explain in psychological terms the empathy and the selfobject funcion of God in pastoral counseling, discussing the ways in which pastoral counselors can facilitate the divine work and the spiritual interaction between their counselees and God.

본고는 목회상담 과정에서 하나님과 내담자, 그리고 목회상담자 삼자간에 이루어지는 관계적 역동을 하인즈 코헛(Heinz Kohut)과 도널드 위니캇(Donald Winnicott) 등의 심리학적 관점에서 조명한다. 목회상담은 일반상담과 달리 하나님을 포함한 '삼자간의 대화(trialogue)'라는 점에서 특징적이다. 현대목회상담학은 사실상 내담자들의 '하나님과의 관계'에 대한 관심에서 출발하였으며 이후로도 그러한 영적 차원에 대한 관심이 목회상담을 다른 일반상담과 구별짓는 특징이 되어 왔다. 그러나 현대목회상담학이 일반심리학의 관점과 언어를 주로 차용하면서 그러한 영적 차원에 대한 논의가 충분히 이뤄지지 못한 것이 또한 사실이다. 본고는 그래서 목회상담의 그러한 영적 차원에 대한 논의를 활성화하고자 하는 노력으로 목회상담의 과정에서 내담자와 상담자 사이만 아니라 하나님과 두 사람 사이에도 이루어지는 ‘공감(empathy)’과 ‘자기대상전이(selfobject transference),’ ‘변형적 내면화(transmuting internalization)’ 등의 관계적 역동을 규명하기 위해 노력한다. 일반심리학의 관점에서 보면 ‘공감’이나 ‘자기대상전이,’ ‘변형적 내면화’ 등의 개념을 하나님에게까지 적용한다는 것이 부자연스러워 보일 수 있다. 그러나 필자는 인격적 주체인 하나님과 우리 사이에도 그런 심리학적 용어로 설명할 수 있는 상호작용이 일어나고 있고 그러한 관계적 상호작용이 심리학적 관점에서 설명될 필요가 있다고 생각한다. 하나님의 ‘공감’이나 ‘자기대상 역할’은 상담과정에 개입하여 적극적으로 내담자를 변화시키는 하나님의 방식이며 상담과정을 통해 당신이 어떤 분이심을 우리에게 알게 하시는 하나님의 자기계시(self-revelation)이다. 목회상담자는 상담과정을 통해 이와 같은 하나님의 활동을 분별하고 돕는 역할을 수행하며 내담자의 치유를 도모할 뿐 아니라 하나님을 증거하는 하나님의 사역자이다. 본고는 실제 목회상담의 사례를 통해 그것의 과정에서 이루어지는 하나님의 ‘공감’과 ‘자기대상’ 역할이 어떤 것인지 규명하고 목회상담자가 어떻게 그러한 하나님의 활동을 돕고 하나님과 내담자의 상호관계를 증진시킬 수 있을지 논의한다.
