Henri Nouwen, a representative spiritual teacher of the second half of the 20th century, a professor of pastoral theology and a minister of the disabled community, gives an important teaching on Christian discernment by sincerely sharing the calling discernment he had experienced. Nouwen's calling discernment includes the entire process by which he, who was a professor at Yale University's Divinity School, affirms his calling to life with the poor in South America, fully realizing the true meaning of his calling. Nouwen's calling discernment was initially to confirm whether South America was the place of calling, but it was not just a matter of choosing a place, it made him realize what Nouwen truly desired, dreaming of that true desire, and ultimately as it is fulfilled, it allows us to live the life of a calling to fully live the true self and the Paschal mystery. This paper examines the entire process of Nouwen's calling discernment in South America, not only showing how Nouwen's actual discernment was, but what disciplines he practices for discernment. It will be emphasized that his purpose of discernment is to lead to full devotion and maturity of inherent self. For the sake of discernment, Nouwen made clarification of what he wanted and what he would discern first, and thoroughly researched the discernment situation and the challenges and tasks required for the ministry to choose. For discernment, Nouwen meditates on the Word, prays, and reflects on the Word to purify his desires, find self-awareness, and the will of God, and work together with his friends of prayer until God's desire and his own desire, that is, these two desires are completely one desire.
