Choreography is a work that designs movements based on the thinking and judgment of choreographer and the trained body. The utilization of AI technology in dance creation is different from the conventional way which used to be created depending on choreographer's intuitive decision making in human-to-human relationships with other dancers but newly recognizes the creative issues accompanied with the process of choreography by creating choreography with the collaboration with a machine. This thesis reviews the trend of research on AI technology which has been developed up to now for dance creation, and further researches the creation process by modern dance choreographers such as Merce Cunningham, Trisha Brown, and Wayne McGregor who recognized AI technology is a beneficial partner to support dance creation and demonstrated the dance works that apply AI technology. Through this, this study explores the potential of AI technology as a choreography tool, and intends to discuss several issues that accompany during the process when AI is applied to the dance creation.

안무는 안무가의 사고와 판단 그리고 훈련된 신체를 기반으로 움직임을 디자인하는 작업이다. 무용창작에서 인공지능 기술의 활용은 다른 무용수들과 인간대 인간의 관 계 속에서 안무가의 직관적인 의사결정에 따라 만들어졌던 전통적인 방식과는 달리 기계와의 협업으로 안무를 만들어내면서, 안무과정에 있어 수반되는 다양한 문제들에 대해 새로운 방식으로 인식하게 한다. 본 논문에서는 무용창작을 위해 현재까지 개발된 인공지능 기술들에 대한 연구 동 향을 검토하고, 나아가서 인공지능 기술을 무용창작을 지원하는 유익한 파트너로 수 용하여 인공지능 기반 무용공연 프로젝트를 시연한 현대무용 안무가인 머스 커닝햄, 트리샤 브라운, 웨인 맥그리거의 창작과정을 살펴보았다. 이를 통해 안무도구로서 인 공지능 기술의 가능성을 탐색하고 인공지능이 무용창작에 적용되면서 수반되는 몇 가 지 주요 쟁점들에 대해 논의하고자 하였다.
