“One Declaration” is one of Arishima’s short essays published in the Journal “Kaizo” in January, 1922. In those days in Japan, influenced by the Russian Bolshevik Revolution, the socialist movements as well as labor movements were in full bloom. “One Declaration,” which debates the rule of intellectuals in the labor revolution and created a great sensation among his contemporaries, ranks among the indispensable texts through which one can understand the Arishima’s intellectual development.
“One Declaration” comprehends the full demand for revolution through the awakening of the working class, and praises their independent deeds as the motive power that connects with social reform. “OneDeclaration” remonst rates against the leading rule of intellectuals in the labor movement and advocates the impossibility of class transference; it is a radical piece rebelling against the contemporary discourse that optimistically believes intellectuals can act on behalf of the working class. Arishima’s awareness of his own self-denial should be regarded as the conscientious enunciation that urges intellectuals to transcend the class conflicts and reform from within.
In the present day, with the remarkable development of the economy, the problem proposed by Arishima of the conflicts between the intelligentsia and the working class has changed greatly. However, even now with the evelopment of globalization, the working environment has been changing and new labor problems are being created. On the other hand, the working class itself, which has been supporting industrial society, is approaching disorganization. In the knowledge-driven society brought on by the informati on technology revolution, the differential in every segment of society grows bigger; therefore, the class society, to put it mildly, has been replaced by a differential society. In returning to Arishima’s discourse on the conflicts between intellectuals and workers in the light of current affairs, the phenomen on of polarization becomes increasingly clear.
This project, which proposes a discussion of intellectuals in a period of change, would urge the intellectuals of today to grasp the true nature of the age and reflect upon themselves in order to overcome the new contradictions.
