This article dealt with the diversity of the Korean cable industry. It examined the diversity, in terms of source, content and exposure. Following the Korea-US Free Trade Agreement, it attempted to evaluate the change of the diversity in the three aspects. The Korean cable industry has much depended upon the import of the US programs. Furthermore, the American movies, animations, dramas, documentaries and sports programs have been popular among the Korean audience. More American channels for these genres are estimated to enter the Korean cable market, which has been concentrated by a few cable companies and terrestrial broadcasters. The American media conglomerates' specific strategies for entering the Korean market has not been decided yet. Their strategies will be determined, in connection with the Korean business interests. In consequence, the Korea-US Free Trade Agreement may have a negative impact on the diversity of the industry.

한미 FTA 체결에 의해 미국의 복합 미디어 기업에 의한 국내 방송 시장 진출의 폭이 확대됨에 따라 문화를 미국화 혹은 동질화시킨다는 비판과 새로운 다양성 증대라는 입장이 팽팽히 맞서고 있다. 또한 협 상 결과가 국내 방송시장에 큰 영향을 줄 것이라는 예측과 그렇지 않 을 것으로 보는 주장이 공존한다. 본 논문에서는 국가간 영상물 유통에 관한 이론적 검토와 한미 FTA 결과에 따른 케이블 산업의 다양성의 변화를 방송위원회의 시나리오와 방송영상산업진흥원의 연구 등을 기반으로 살펴본다. 본 연구에서는 현재의 케이블 방송 산업의 소유의 다양성, 내용의 다양성, 노출의 다양성을 점검해보고, 한미 FTA 결과에 따른 소유의 다양성, 내용 다양 성, 노출 다양성의 변화를 예측하고자 한다. 한국 케이블 산업은 현재 과점 상태에 놓여 있으며, 장르별 차이 는 있지만 수입프로그램 중 미국 프로그램에 대한 의존도가 상당히 높 다. 또한 미국 프로그램에 대한 시청자들의 인기도 높다. 이런 구조로 인해 앞으로 한미 FTA 결과에 따라 미국 미디어 복합 기업들의 추가 진출의 가능성은 매우 높다. 이들의 진출 전략은 우리나라 사업자들의 이해관계와 밀접하게 연결되어 결정될 것으로 보인다. 이는 향후 우리 나라의 케이블 산업의 다양성에 부정적 영향을 줄 것으로 보인다.
