Different Glass Ceilings: A Comparative Analysis of Gender Discrimination in Public Relations between South Korea and the United States

원문정보

초록

영어

Gender studies have been in the spotlight in the field of public relations. Previous studies have proved that gender discrimination is still prevalent in the profession with regard to hiring, salaries, and promotion, despite the relatively greater proportion of female practitioners in the field. Nevertheless, those studies have been basically limited, in that they have been only focused on situations of Western societies, the United States in particular. The present study, therefore, attempted to compare and contrast gender discrimination phenomena in the field of public relations between South Korea and the United States, and to investigate whether respectively distinctive cultures lead to different appearance of gender discrimination in each cultural setting. The findings revealed that gender discrimination phenomena are manifested distinctively from country to country, presumably due to different cultural influence at an individual and societal level. Implications and limitations, and subsequent future research suggestions are also discussed.
