This study aims at investigating the culture at Hon-dae Area where has manifested self-generated and unique culture in order to explore how the study on city space and cultural studies could be integrated. Accordingly, it focuses at how the culture at Hong-dae has changed since the late half of 1990s and inquires into what changes it gas experienced ultimately in terms of quality through these changes. Also it seeks for a method to develop these circumstance by discussing its fundamental reasons overall. Through the culture at Hong-dae Area has occupied an important place by contributing to rather productive diversity of culture in consumption-oriented culture focusing uniform mass production which has been prevalent in South society until now, just few studies on the culture at Hong-dae Area have been conducted. Moreover, the previous studies were prone to describe cultural phenomena and repeatedly produce discourses, so that concrete audience studies based on diversity have rarely carried out in reality. So this study was launched on the basis of the recognition that this phenomenon discourse in a similar way, in order to overcome these limitations. To this end, it reviews the existing literatures to consider the change of culture first, thereby understanding the current of changes through field works. But it is judged to be somewhat insufficient in grasping all the changes for years with this method only, so this study tried to grasp how the culture at Hong-dae Area has changed through in-depth interview with the long time residents at the area or the persons concerned in the culture at Hong-dae Area.

본 연구는 도시 공간에 대한 연구와 하위문화 연구가 어떻게 접합될 수 있는지에 대해 알아보고자 자생적이며 독특한 문화들을 발현시키고 있는 홍대앞 문화들에 대한 연구를 시도한다. 지난 10여 년 동안 여러 가지 외 부의 위협적인 요소와 내부의 위기를 극복하며 발전해온 홍대앞 문화는 현재 우리 사회 내의 중요한 하위문화로 자리매김하고 있다. 처음 소수의 마니아를 중심으로 발현된 홍대앞 문화는 이후 청년 대부분으로 향유하는 층의 영역을 넓히고 있다. 또한 외국 문물과 국내 문화의 혼종을 통해 새 로운 문화양식의 창출을 주도한다. 따라서 홍대앞 문화들이 1990년대 후반 이후부터 현재까지 시간의 흐름에 따라 어떻게 변화해 왔는가를 살펴보고, 이러한 변화를 통해 궁극적으로 홍대앞 문화들이 어떠한 질적 변화를 겪 게 되었는지에 대해 연구한다. 이를 통해 변화의 근본적인 원인은 무엇인 지 종합적으로 논의하고, 그것이 갖는 함의는 무엇인지 밝혀보고자 한다. 홍대앞의 변화와 그 원인을 재조명해 보는 일은 현대 물질문명과 고도의 자본주의 속에서 점점 더 획일화 되고 대량화 되는 오늘 날 문화적 현 실에서 망각하고 있던 문화의 생산적인 면모를 되살릴 뿐만 아니라 그동 안의 문화적 침체기를 통해 현재의 문화 지형을 비판적으로 인식하고 새로 운 계기를 마련할 수 있다는 점에서 유의미한 작업이 될 것으로 기대한다.
