This study discussed the classification on hostage crime, analyzed the actual conditions of all sorts of hostage case, such as binding, false imprisonment or kidnapping of victims, etc, among crimes of violence or felony, who arrested by Seoul Metropolitan Police Agency, and surveyed some items, such as the state of occurrence of hostage case per year, season and day of week, motives of criminal acts, the occupations of suspects, the degree of association to criminal records, offense patterns, tools of offense, methods employed in crimes, degree of life or physical damage, method of search.

본 연구는 인질사범에 대한 분류를 논의하고 1999년부터 2003년까지 서울지방경찰청에서 검거한 중요 강력․폭력사건 가운데 피해자를 결박하거나 감금 또는 납치한 범죄 등 광범위한 각종 인질사건에 대한 자료를 중심으로 그 실태를 분석하고, 분석내용은 년도별 인질사건의 발생현황, 계절 및 요일별 발생현황, 피의자의 범행동기와 직업 및 전과 관계와 유형, 범행도구와 범행수법, 인적․물적 피해유무, 수사기법 등을 살펴보았다.
