This paper explores the stylistic characteristics of the policy answer(對策) in the civil examination of the late Chosŏn period. The aim of this study is to demonstrate how the exam writing influenced and framed the thought process of examinees by formalizing the writing methods of the policy answer. To this end, two reference books on the policy answer, Ch'aek'yŏng(策型) of the early eighteenth century and Pyŏllyŏhwajo(騈儷華藻) of the early nineteenth century will be analyzed to suggest a general outline of the writing structure and its historical tendency. These two reference books contain rich descriptions and examples on how to cope with the various policy questions (策問) at the actual examination spot. and offer the writing strategies which was thought to guarantee the high score. Firstly, they lay much emphasis on the first part of a piece, namely hŏdu(虛頭) paragraph because the most examiners, according to this reference book, scored the answer sheets after only reading this part, due to the shortage of time. Secondly, their descriptions generally focus on the efficient disposition of sentences and paragraphs, which help examinees not only to save time but also to build a coherent logical structure. Thirdly they provide sentence composition templates which direct the flow of logic in a specific way. All these references on the policy answer reflect the unique nature of examination writing in late Chosŏn.

본고는 조선 후기에 작성된 과책(科策) 참고서 두 편에 대한 분석을 통해, 조선 후기 과책, 더 나아가 과문(科文) 전반의 문체적 특징을 살펴보는 것을 목표로 한 다. 조선 초기의 과문과 달리, 조선 후기의 과문은 전통적인 한문 문체와는 전혀 다른 별격(別格)의 문체가 되어 있었다. 이는 조선만의 특유한 교육ㆍ문화적 배 경이 작용한 결과로, 이 별격 문체들의 거시적인 방향성을 살펴보면 조선이 추구 했던 바, 그리고 그것이 중국과 달랐던 지점에 대해 이해할 수 있다. 이와 같은 관점에서 본고는 한국학중앙연구원 장서각 소장 『책형(策型)』(총3 책)과 국립중앙도서관 소장 『변려화조(騈儷華藻)』(1책) 두 과책 참고서 문헌을 분석 대상으로 삼는다. 『책형』은 18세기 초반에, 『변려화조』는 19세기 초반으로 그 작성 시기가 추정된다. 이 두 문헌에는 당대 과책의 작법 요령이 풍부하게 기술되 어 있어, 조선 후기 과책의 문체적 특징과 수험 문화, 그리고 그 역사적 변화 양상을 살피는데 도움이 된다. 본고는 먼저 두 참고서 문헌의 체제와 내용을 검토하고, 두 문헌에서 소개되고 있는 과책문 작법 요령들을 소개한다. 이들의 정식(程式) 구성 방식, 내용, 수사법 (修辭法) 설명 등의 분석을 통해 이 참고서들의 대체적인 내용을 파악하며, 이를 토대로 조선 후기 과책 문체의 특수성과 역사적 맥락에 대해 논할 것이다.
