One of the important thing at the crime scene of the serial offenses is how the area of the offence is interpreted. The purpose of this study was to test the basic analysis of the geographic profiling approach to the serial murderer, analyzing the perceptional variables and considering the elements which was influenced on the decision of the offence area. Four cases were reviewed on this study. 1. Jung du young who killed 9 people in Pusan for 4 months in 1999 2. Yoo young chul who killed 21 people in Seoul for 7 months in 2003 3. Richard T. Chase who killed 6 people in CA in 1977 4. Robert W. Picton who had killed more than 25 people was arre! sted by California Sacramento County police and the dead body have been still excavating since 1980. The results indicated that the offence location and the place were set up by the offenders' motivation and purpose in any shape. It is also suggested that assessment the offense area and the analysis of the crime scene are to be investigated precedently to analyze the geographic profiling approach to the serial offenders in Korea. Further studies on the variables for the geographic profiling as well as serial offender typology were suggested.

연쇄범죄의 수사현장에서 중요하게 분석되어야 할 사항중의 하나는 연쇄범죄자의 범행지역이 과연 어떠한 의미가 있는지에 대한 것이다. 따라서 본 논문에서는 이미 검거된 연쇄살인범들의 지정학적 의미에 관한 지각(perception)적 요인과 분석을 통해 연쇄 범죄자들의 범행지역(장소) 설정에 영향을 주는 요소(Element)를 고찰함으로서 연쇄범죄의 地政學的 프로파일링 수사기법 연구의 기초 분석을 실시하고자 한다. 또한, 한국 연쇄범죄자의 지리적 분석을 위해서 우선 수집되어야 할 사항들은,1. 범죄현장에서 범죄자의 궁극적 범행목적을 프로파일 하는 요인으로 범행지역에 대한 광범위한 평가가 선행되어야 할 것이다. 때문에 평가의 요인들을 분석 변인으로 설정하는 연구가 시급히 진행되어야 한다.2. 외국의 경우와는 달리 도시의 규모나 개념상 정형화된 이동수단의 패턴을 뚜렷이 나타내고 있지 않고, 대상자 유형에 따라 지역이 결정되는 경향을 나타내고 있으므로 사건현장에서 이러한 분석이 선행되어야 할 사항이라고 볼 수 있다. 향후, 연구된 자료를 바탕으로 지리적 프로파일링을 위한 변인설정에 관한 연구와, 연쇄 범죄자의 지정학적 타입에 대한 유형분류 연구 등의 필요성이 제기된다.
