This study examines the therapeutic meanings of the center of the circle in art therapy based on a discussion about the circle from a formative perspective. The circle is not angular but round; it infinitely repeats and circulates along its circumference, and it always has a center inside. To create a form that is homogeneous and complete, the circle inevitably contains a clear center, which has significance as the psychological and physical center as well as the figurative center. In art therapy, the ‘centrality’ of the circle helps clients to discover their inner strength by internalizing the meaning of the center through concentration and meditation, while eliciting self-regulation and a psychological balance by activating the clients’ individual autonomous functions. This study will be of significance to those establishing therapeutic bases with regard to how the ‘centrality’ of the circle can lead to positive psychological changes in art therapy clients.

본 연구는 원에 대한 조형적 관점에서의 논의를 토대로 미술치료에서 원의 중심이 함축하고 있는 치료적 의미를 고찰하였다. 원은 모나지 않게 동글고 원만하며. 그 둘레를 따라 무한하게 반복, 순환하고, 내부 에 반드시 중심을 갖는 시각적 속성을 지닌다. 동질적이며 완전한 형태를 만들기 위해 원은 하나의 분명 한 중심을 형성하게 되는데, 이러한 원의 중심은 물리적으로 만들어지는 도형의 중심이자. 심리적, 신체 적, 우주적 중심이라는 중요한 상징성을 함께 내포한다. 미술치료에서 원의 ‘중심성'은 집중과 명상으로 중심의 의미를 내면화시켜 내담자의 내면의 힘을 발견하게 하고, 개인의 자율적 기능을 활성화하여 자기 조절과 심리적 균형을 가능하도록 돕는다. 본 연구는 원의 '중심성'이 미술치료에서 내담자들의 긍정적 심리적 변화를 어떻게 이끌어낼 수 있는지 그 치료적 근거를 마련하는 데 의의가 있다.
