Television dramas generate discourses on social reality and produce cultural products. Researchers pay attention to the representation and narrative of popular culture based on social discourse and participate in cultural forums, often employing criticism. The discourses focused here on are youth representations and narratives of the types actively discussed at present. Since 2010, self-portraits of the young generation have been considered as a symptom of the times. In the discourse related to youth, terms such as 'survival', 'abandonment and resignation', and the 'neoliberal subject of self-innovation', young men are represented as otherized objects. Pattern of generational conflict are also seen in various areas of society. In this context, this study regards the drama Itaewon Class as a social interpretation of the conflict between youth and other generations, with a closer examination of this narrative. Through diverse youth characters, the drama presented new values beyond material aspects, such as convictions, ambition, trust, faith and solidarity. However, the narrative did not properly reflect the changes in the area of Itaewon, the actual name of the location. Itaewon was presented as a space of admiration for the superficial freedom of young people and as an epic space of hostile confrontation, showing limits in the form of a device by which a hero fantasy is retained rather than reality. However, the problems of restoring identity, self-esteem, and value in the lives of youth presented by this drama are issues important to recall.

텔레비전 드라마는 사회 현실에 관한 담론을 생성하고 문화 산물을 만들어낸다. 연구자들은 사회 담론에 근거한 대중문화 재현과 서사에 주목하고, 비평을 통해 공론장에 참여한다. 이 연구가 주목한 것은 청년 담론이며, 텔레비전 드라마는 이를 어떻게 재현하고 있는지 살펴본다. 2010년 이후 청년 세대의 자화상 은 일종의 시대적 징후로 다뤄졌다. ‘생존’, ‘포기와 체념’, ‘신자유주의적 자기계발 주체’와 같은 수식어 와 같이, 청년과 관련된 담론 속에서 청년은 타자화된 객체로 재현되었다. 그리고 세대 갈등의 양상은 심화되는 양상이다. 이러한 맥락에서 이 연구는 드라마 <이태원 클라쓰>를 청년과 세대 갈등에 대한 사 회적 해석으로 간주하고, 그 서사에 주목한다. 드라마가 제시하는 청년 캐릭터와 캐릭터 사이의 관계 그 리고 서사 전개 배경인 이태원을 중심으로 분석한다. 드라마는 다양하고 이질적인 청년 캐릭터와 이들의 관계를 통해 소신, 패기, 신뢰, 믿음, 연대와 같은 물질적인 것 이상의 새로운 가치를 제시한다. 하지만 서사는 실제 지명이기도 한 이태원의 변화상을 제대로 반영하지 못하고 있다. 서사의 배경인 이태원은 청년들의 피상적인 자유에 대한 동경의 공간, 적대적인 대결의 서사 공간으로 소비되고, 서사는 리얼리 티를 획득하지 못하고 영웅 판타지에 머무는 한계를 지닌다. 하지만 이 드라마가 제시한 청년 삶의 주체 성, 자존감, 가치관 회복의 문제는 되새겨볼 만한 이슈이다.
