Due to COVID-19, making non-face-to-face worship a common practice in churches led to active discussion on worship and communion. However, it has been difficult to find careful considerations on preaching compared to a significant number of discussions on worship and sacraments. The reason is that preaching via video has not only become common in Korean churches, but visual media is generally assumed as an unrestricted medium for preaching. Is visual media really a desirable tool for preaching? In order to answer this question, this paper explores the contributions and limitations of video preaching. First, the writer investigates how preaching via video is carried out within the churches by classifying them into four categories based on time and space. This classification of video preaching will show that preaching via video, unlike on-site preaching, has characteristics transcending the limits of time and space which is why video sermons are widely used. Second, the fact that limitations of preaching via video from a homiletical perspective will be pointed out. There are limitations of preaching via video in more essential respects in terms of the worship and pastoral context of preaching, and the adequacy of the visual media. In conclusion, some practical suggestions will be presented to make up for the limitations of preaching via video for preachers. With the accelerated non-face-to-face culture due to the prolonged pandemic, preaching via video is sure to take up a larger portion of the church’s practice in the future. Therefore, it is more important and timely than ever to carefully consider and objectively analyze the issues and problems of video preaching.

코로나19로 인한 비대면 예배의 시행은 예배와 성찬에 대한 활발한 논의로 이어졌다. 그러나 비대면 예배 시행의 상황에서 일어난 예배와 성찬에 대한 활발한 논의에 비해, 설교는 화제성있는 주제가 되지 못했 다. 그 이유는 한국교회 내에서 영상 설교가 이미 일반화되었을 뿐 아 니라 영상이라는 매체가 설교를 전달하는 데 제약이 없다고 일반적으 로 전제하기 때문이다. 그러나 과연 영상이 설교를 전달하는데 무결한 매체인가? 본 논문은 이 질문에 대답하기 위해 영상 설교에 대해서 고 찰한다. 첫째, 영상 설교가 한국교회 내에서 어떤 형태로 시행되고 있는지 조 사하는데, 시간과 공간을 기준으로 4가지로 분류한다. 이 분류는 영상 설교가 현장 설교와는 달리 시간과 공간의 한계를 초월하는 특성이 있 으며, 바로 이 특성이 영상 설교가 널리 시행되는 이유라는 것을 가르 쳐 준다. 둘째, 설교학적인 관점에서 영상 설교가 지닌 한계를 지적한 다. 비록 영상 설교가 시간과 공간의 물리적 한계는 뛰어넘었으나 더 본질적인 측면에서, 즉 예배적 맥락, 목회적 맥락, 매체의 적실성 관점 에서 한계가 존재한다는 점을 논한다. 결론적으로, 영상 설교를 시행해 야 하는 현장 설교자들을 위해 영상 설교가 지닌 한계를 보완할 수 있는 몇 가지 실천적인 방안을 제시한다. 코로나19의 장기화로 비대면 문화가 가속화하는 상황에서, 영상 설 교는 앞으로 교회의 실천 가운데 더 큰 비중을 차지하게 될 것이 분명 하다. 그러므로 영상 설교에 대해 고찰하는 것은 그 어느 때보다 중요 하고 시의적절하다고 할 수 있을 것이다.
