This article aims to explore a Confucian ecological worldview based on “The Four Books,” which are “The Great Learning, The Works of Mencius, The Analects of Confucius, and The Doctrine of the Mean,” that can offer a worthy resource for an antidote to the contemporary environmental circumstances. The contemporary people have accomplished rapid economic and scientific development; however, they have stressed these to the damage of the environment, which leads to an ecological crisis. In that sense, we need to look at the Confucian tradition, as found in the Four Books, which has much to provide the contemporary need for the creation of and a conversion to an ecologically friendly worldview. In exploring environmental issues through the Confucian tradition, I select the Four Books for two reasons: first, Confucians treat the Four Books as their canonical ones; and second, they utilize their canonical books in disordered circumstances like an ecological crisis. My assertion is that teachings from the Four Books can provide us an overview of environmental ethics that is necessary to build up the basic ground for a completely new and proper way to approach the present ecological crisis. In this study, I will claim the benefits of grounding a Confucian ecological dialogue in an understanding of these texts that Chu Hsi (1130-1200) defined as ‘the central of the Confucian canon.’ In the light of the Four Books, I will proceed in the following way: first, I will discover how the language used by Confucian thinkers offers environmentally friendly metaphors; second, I will explore the organic cosmology of Confucianism linked to the Way of Heaven; third, I will investigate the reciprocal relationship between human beings and ecology, which ; and fourth, I will scrutinize the notion of the sage, a perfect model for humanity to follow. In a nutshell, the Four Books could invite contemporary people toward an environmentally conscious life and offer guideline for harmony and love between people and our natural neighbor.

본 논문 목적은 현대 생태계 위기 상황을 극복하기 위해 유학의 핵심 경전인 사서(四書, 대학, 맹자, 논어, 중용)를 기반으로 유교의 생태학적 세계관을 탐구하는 것이다. 현대인은 급속한 경제 및 과학 발전을 이루었 으나 이는 생태학적 위기를 초래하는 환경의 훼손을 가져왔다. 그런 의미 에서 우리는 생태 친화적인 세계관의 창조와 전환에 대한 현대적 필요성 에 응대할 수 있는 사서(the Four Books)의 유교 전통을 살펴볼 필요가 있 다. 유교 전통을 통해 환경적 이슈를 탐구하는 가운데, 연구자는 두 가지 이유로 사서를 선정한다. 첫째, 유학자들은 사서를 핵심 경전(canonical books)으로 삼고 둘째, 그들은 생태 위기와 같은 무질서한 상황 시, 이 경 전을 활용하여 그 해결점을 찾고자 한다. 이런 맥락에서, 사서의 가르침 은 현재의 생태 위기를 극복할 수 있는 하나의 적절한 방법이자 그 기반 을 구축하는 데 필요한 생태학적 윤리 개요를 제시할 것으로 사료된다. 본 연구에서는 사서를 유학의 핵심 경전을 삼은 중국 남송의 유학자인 주희 (1130-1200)의 사상을 기초로 유교의 생태학적 측면을 모색할 것이다. 사 서에 비추어, 연구자는 다음과 같은 순서로 진행한다. 첫째, 유교사상가들 이 사용하는 언어가 어떻게 생태 친화적인 은유를 제시하는지 찾아보고 둘 째, 하늘의 길과 관련된 유교의 유기적 우주론을 탐구하고 셋째, 인간과 생 태계의 관계성을 알아보고 넷째, 인간이 추구해야 하는 완벽한 모델인 현 자의 개념을 모색한다. 본 연구 결과, 사서는 현대인을 생태학적으로 의식적인 삶으로 살게 하면서 사람과 우리 자연 사이의 조화와 사랑에 대한 지 침을 제공하는 데 크게 기여하리라 본다.
