Korean Silhak and American pragmatism are different from each other in their time and place of origination, their background, and way of expressions. On the other hand, they share many ideas; they have the same purpose of usefulness in life and the same method focusing on experience and experiment.Silhak in Choseon Dynasty was severely limited by Yangban caste system, respect for Sunbi, disrespect for trade and industry.Pragmatism etymologically means performance, experiment, or business and its basic contents come from American philosophy resulting from the influence of the biology, physiology, psychology of 19the century, all starting from the evolution theory of that time. The word pragmatism spread, and at present it fairly spots the pages of the philosophic journals.The pragmatic method is primarily a methos of settling metaphysical disputes that otherwise might be interminable.(21, p28) The pragmatist is the last person to deny the reality of such abstractions.Pragmatism or Silhak thoughts must be thoughts and philosophy useful to the public regardless of areas, ages, societies. It may be impossible to benefit or to be useful to all. Pagmatism must intend to be useful to all and must not be harmful anyone. A better pragmatism benefits most and harm least. A better pragmatism benefits must be more useful to the society than to particular individuals. Individualism useful for the world must be recommended, while egoism must be destroyed.

실학사상이나 실용주의는 용어자체는 다르지만 그 내용을 표현함에 있어 같은 의미로 받아들여도 좋을 것이다. 한국의 실학사상이 조선 왕조시대라는 전통사회의 성곽속에서 발생하고 실천하려는 사상이라면, 미국 실용주의는 미국 독립과 함께 사상의 자유와 개방이라는 사회적분위기에서 발생되고 실천된 사상이다. 실학사상가들의 정책제시, 허균이나 박지원 같은 사상가를 통해 자연경제의 타파, 무위도식하는 양반들의 무능풍자, 양반들의 허위와 가식 그리고 부패상 등의 폭로는 왕조사회, 양반제도라는 특수성 속에서 메아리로 그치고 말았다. 그러나 미국의 실용주의 특히 듀이의 실용주의는 정책에 깊이 반영되었고, 미국 국민들의 마음속에 각인되었으며, 실천되어 오늘날의 미국으로 이끌었다. 한국의 실학사상은 조선사회를 개조하려 했지만 미국 실용주의는 개방되고 개조된 사회에 의해서 발생하고 발전했다는 역설이 성립될 수도 있다. 미국의 실용주의는 미국의 철학이다. 숙명론을 신봉하느니보다 낙천적인 생활태도로 현세에서의 성공을 꿈꿀 수 있는 미국 사회의 생활철학의 근거가 된 것이 미국 실용주의이다. 자기의 신앙 대상이 아니어서 배척하는 것이 아니라 국민들에게 필요하다면, 국가와 민족과 국민에게 도움이 된다면 신이라도 만드는 것이 미국의 실용주의이다. 실용주의나 실학사상 모두 실제적이면, 실용적이며, 실천적이며, 삶에 이로운 것을 추구하며, 실험적이며, 경험이 중요시된다는 점에서는 동일하다.이제 우리는 과거의 실학사상이 실천에 옮겨지지 못하고 성공하지 못한 것을 거울삼아, 이미 받아들여지고 있는 실용주의를 우리의 것으로 만들어 실천하면서 세계에서 최고로 부강한 국가, 세계에서 최고로 훌륭한 민족, 세계에서 가장 평화롭고 행복한 국민들이 되도록 매진해야 할 것이다.
