Antitheorists in ethics raise questions about theorizing the moral domain and then deny the possibility, necessity and desirability of moral theory. The purpose of this study is to examine what kind of moral theory moral philosophy should aim for in the face of the challenge of antitheory arguments. For this, I try to investigate the following three things: first, what are the dispensable human needs that moral theories can satisfy adequately; second, what the characteristics of moral theory are and what morality is really; and third, how moral theory works in our practical area. Moral theory is necessary in responding to the demands on the justification of morality, in resolving inconsistencies or conflicts between moral intuitions, and between the moral and nonmoral considerations, and in presenting new moral possibilities for our consideration. Moral theory, contrary to the criticism of antitheorists, can be taken to be a normative ethical theory which provides a set of universal moral principles for us. Also, moral principles, while they do serve to guide specific acts, are intended most fundamentally to guide one's entire life. It is true that moral reasons are not always the appropriate reasons to act on. Nevertheless, the moral consideration has its ultimate authority over nonmoral considerations in that it is our expression of excellence which we should try to attain.

윤리학에서의 반이론주장은 도덕이론이 불가능할 뿐만 아니라 필요하지도, 바람직하지도 않다고 믿고 도덕적인 영역의 이론화에 반대한다. 본 연구는 반이론주장으로부터의 도전을 계기로 도덕철학이 제시하는 도덕이론이 지향해야할 적절한 방향을 모색하는데 목적이 있다. 이를 위해 도덕이론들이 적절하게 만족시킬 수 있는 불가피한 필요들이 무엇인지, 도덕이론의 성격과 도덕성의 의미는 무엇인지 고찰한다. 또한 도덕이론이 실천적인 영역에서 어떻게 작용하며 그것이 어떤 한계를 가지는지를 검토한다. 도덕이론은 도덕성의 정당화요구에 반응하고, 도덕적 직관들간의, 그리고 도덕적 가치와 그 밖의 다른 가치들간의 불일치나 갈등을 해소하도록 우리를 이끌어주며, 우리가 고려할 새로운 도덕적 가능성을 제시해준다. 성격에 있어서 도덕이론은, 반이론가들의 비판과 달리, 보편적인 도덕원칙을 제시하는 규범윤리이론일 수 있다. 도덕이론이 제시하는 보편성은 행위자와 행위자가 처한 구체적인 상황에 관련된 여러 변수들이 작용함으로써 다양한 정도로 실현되는 것을 허용한다. 한편 실천적 영역에서 도덕이론의 작용을 살펴보면, 도덕원칙에 따라 행위하는 것은 도덕적 관심으로부터 행위하는 것이며, 도덕원칙에 복종할 때 행위자의 감정이 함께 작용하는 것을 허용한다. 그리고 도덕원칙은 개별적 행위를 안내하는데 제한되지 않고 보다 근본적으로 삶의 지침으로 의도된다. 도덕적 요구와 실제 삶간의 괴리는 도덕에 한계로 작용하지만, 도덕적 요구의 옳음은 우리가 지향하고 추구해야할 수월성을 제시한다는 점에서 여전히 우선성을 주장할 수 있다.
