Frege's Epistemology and Philosophy of MathematicsCheolho ShimFrege's epistemology had been ignored for a long time, partly because of his reticence on epistemological issues. This paper addresses questions concerning the place of epistemology in Frege's philosophy, including the motives of logicist programme, the distinctions of analytic/synthetic, a priori/a posteriori, and the relationship between Kant and Frege. A central claim that I argue for is the epistemological significance of the theory of sense and reference. Usually, the theory is discussed in the context of philosophy of language, irrespective of the philosophy of mathematics or epistemology. My thesis is that the sense/reference distinction had been introduced in order to establish his logicist programme, more specifically, to establish his axiom V in the system of Grundgesetze being logically primitive analytic law.

프레게의 인식론은 오랫동안 주목의 대상이 아니었다. 인식론적 문제에 대한 프레게의 과묵함이 그 원인이라 할 수 있다. 근래에 와서야 조금씩 일기 시작한 프레게의 인식론에 대한 새로운 조명들은 프레게 철학에서 인식론의 비중과 의의 및 프레게의 인식론에 대한 기여도 등의 보다 일반적인 문제들로부터 ‘논리주의의 동기’, ‘분석/종합, 선험/후험 구분’, ‘논리법칙의 조건’, ‘뜻/지시체 구분의 수리철학적 및 인식론적 의의’ 등 수리철학 특유의 인식론적 쟁점들에 대한 해석들을 주요 테마로 한다. 이 글은 이들 쟁점들을 둘러싼 논쟁들을 정리하면서, 프레게의 수리철학적 기획과 성과들에 대한 기존의 언어 철학 중심적 해석에 비해 인식론적 해석이 갖는 장점을 부각시키면서 현대적으로 윤색된 프레게의 모습을 부분적으로나마 프레게 당시의 모습에 가깝게 복원해보는 것을 목표로 한다.
