Modernity and FreedomByung-Chul SoThe concept 'freedom', the key word of modernity has been understood as the arbitrariness of private desires ever since it was reconciled with individual pleasures and self-interests. But private freedom like that does not only appear as a power in relation to other ones, but also creates and maintains the mechanisms of transindividual power indirectly through shrinking public interaction among individuals. This self-contradiction of freedom seems to prove that along with modernity freedom is a decisively failed project. But freedom has been a complex and ambivalent project. Freedom as a philosophical project of modernity connotes the communicative dimension that is not reduced to private individual's economic rationality. On that account it demands the transcendence of private individuality and functions as the foundation of intersubjectively recognizable moral norms. Hence there is no reason for declaring that every significance of modernity was drained on the ground of the self-contradiction of private freedom. The ambivalence of modern freedom, as such, is a mark of the dynamic vitality of modernity. For the challenges of the critical dimensions that are not reduced to a single identity are the healthy nutrients of modernity that has groped its way undergoing all sorts of self-contradictions.
