The main purpose of this essay is to show how Enlightenment and Romanticism are negated and reconciled (aufgehoben) in Hegel's philosophy. Enlightenment philosophers negate the objects which are assumed to transcend the Reason. But Hegel insists that the Reason in Enlightenment is not in fact Reason (Vernunft) but Understanding (Verstand) and that the unity between subject and object cannot be achieved with Understanding as analytic and divisive, but only through Reason as synthetic and reconciliatory. Hegel also puts stress on feelings that are relatively neglected by Enlightenment philosophers. In this respect Hegel is akin to Romantic philosophers. But there ist between them difference: Romantic philosophers insist that the unity between subject and object is to be achieved through intellectual intuition (intellektuelle Anschauung) or arts (Kunst) and they will express their freedom with some endlessly original creative power. On the contrary, Hegel thinks that with this Romantic ideal the unity is not to be attained and there remains ultimately only vicious infinity. We can find Hegel's greatness in that he synthesized the Enlightenment with Romanticism and created therewith a romanticized rationalism or a rationalized romanticism.
