The main purpose of this paper is to account for Mencius moral self-cultivation through the thinking faculty of hsin(心, mind). Mencius thinks that man has innately the moral propensity. This moral propensity is not the moral principle and standard but moral ability, and not the complete morality but the cultivable faculty. In moral self-cultivation, Mencius emphasizes the thinking faculty of hsin. In the opinion of Mencius, the thinking faculty of hsin makes a distinction between the conscious ability and the ability of judgment. We awake to the moral sense with the conscious ability, and behave well in a situation with the ability of judgment. Mencius insists that for the realization of morality men must train not only for the thinking faculty of hsin but also for moral orientation with volitive efforts, and practice those in the action.
