Pomponazzi has been recognized as one of the most important Aristotelian philosophers in the Renaissance. He makes great efforts to get back to the real meaning of Aristotle without regard for religious teaching. In spite of his resolve to adhere to the text and to explicate it in its own terms, he draws material from non-Aristotelian sources simply since he thinks that the insights found among the texts from other traditions can usefully be applied to strengthening his own philosophy. This paper is intended to show his eclecticism. In the De immortalitate animae, Pomponazzi places man at the center of the universe much in the same way as Ficino and Pico had done a generation earlier, while in another context he argues that virtue is its own reward, a favorite Stoic theme known to him through Seneca and many other sources. Furthermore, Pomponazzi is indebted to Averroes for the idea that the value of religion lies not finding truth but rather in controlling community life. Immortality for Pomponazzi is a fairy tale, or rather a fiction; the purpose of this fiction is to maintain order in society.
