초록

영어

It is natural to think that there are two different types of dualism, substance dualism and property dualism in terms of their metaphysical foundation and their formality and purpose as plausible explanatory models of the mind/body theory. Property dualism should be called the ontological physicalism while substance dualism is called ontological dualism. According to ontological physicalists, all concrete existences are physical, but there are some nonphysical properties that remain unreducible to their physical base properties. By contrast, ontological dualists hold that there are two entirely distinct substances, mental and physical substances, in the world. Arises an immediate question. Does this dualism provide a plausible solution to the problem of mental causation? Jaegwon Kim forcefully argues that the ontology of immaterial minds does not help us with mental causation problem. In this paper, first, I will examine the two types of dualism by critically discussing their main claims and what lack to be plausible theories of mind. In so doing, I will try to show that Cartesian dualism is untenable because the mental substance of this dualism lacks a spatial location, which in turn makes it committed to what Kim calls “the paring problem.” To this point, I will provide another important concept “dependency” as a theoretical flaw of Cartesianism. Second, I will look into the supervenience argument as the most serious argument against the property dualism. But, I will conclude that the property dualism remains unharmed. Finally, I will briefly examine a seemingly new concept “Sinchesng (maybe, the property of being body as the union of mind and body)” provided by Dae-Hyun Jung as overcoming problems of dualism by providing three unclarified points shown in his claims in understanding the two concepts of dualism.
