The main purpose of this paper is to distinguish a very peculiar sort of concepts which may be fairly named "shadow concepts". Shadow concepts are supposed to be postulated outside the whole of the empirical, yet to be made intelligible only by means of the empirical. While shadow concepts are transcendental in that they obtain outside the empirical, not every transcendental concept is a shadow concept. Unlike ordinary or transcendental ones, shadow concepts are completely disconnected from the empirical, and thus empty in themselves. I try to show that we can make sense of such a concept only in terms of Container schema a la Johnson, which consists of such elements as inside, boundary, and outside. In this analysis, a shadow concept is something that claims its being somewhere outside the boundary of the container which wraps up the whole empirical content. Because of this peculiar nature, shadow concepts are frequently, but not necessarily, evoked in connection with “deconstruction". Nagarjuna's “Emptiness", Laozi's Tao, and Derrida's différance are some of those. However, they take quite different philosophical itineraries therefrom; Derrida stops at différance, heralding no messages out of it, and Laozi starts speaking up at Tao, while Nagarjuna suggests a return from Emptiness to this world to make sense of anything at all. Based on this analysis, I conclude that only Nagarjuna's returning message goes well with the experientialist's urge to return to the bodily basis of the embodied experience.
