This paper studied the meaning of paradoxes and negations within the interrelationship to double negative expressions and philosophical characteristics of LAO-TZU. And so, we have been examined three theses as following. First, we've been analysed the origins and special or distinctive features of paradoxes and contradictions between east and west. Second, we've been investigated typical paradoxes of LAO-TZU which was constituted by so many contradictory statements and examined significances of paradoxes and contradictions to LAO-TZU's theory of philosophy. And third, we have been understood the meaning of negative expressions and investigated the roles and functions of paradoxes within the correlationship to philosophical systems of LAO-TZU. As the result of that, we've knew that LAO-TZU was used to synthesized rather than excluded the contradictions in other to pursue the harmony and balance of human knowledge totally. That was the essence of LAO-TZU's paradoxes and negations, and which were premised his viewpoints and acknowledgements about recognitions, language and reality of all beings. But so many reachers had been examined about that already.

이 글에서는 노자철학에 있어서 역설과 모순의 의의를 이중 부정의 언사 및 노자 철학의 특질과의 상관성 속에서 탐구해 보았다. 이를 위해 제2장에서는 역설과 모순 개념의 시원 및 특징을 동양과 서양의 관점으로 나누어 이해해보고, 제3장에서는 상호 모순되는 내용을 동시에 주장하고 있는 노자의 대표적인 역설들을 분석 검토해 봄으로써 노자의 사유체계에 있어서 역설과 모순의 위상을 음미해 보았다. 이를 근거로 제4장에서는 부정적 언설의 역할과 의미를 노자의 사유체계에 비추어 이해한 다음 노자의 이중 부정의 언사와 역설적이고 모순적인 언급이 그의 철학 특히 그 사유 과정이나 사상 체계에 대해 갖는 역할이나 기능을 규명해 보았다. 이에 따르면 노자의 역설과 부정적 언사는 모순을 배제하기 보다는 오히려 모순이나 모순 관계를 종합함으로써 사고의 전체적 조화와 균형을 적극적으로 모색하고자 했다는 데에 그 의의가 있음을 알 수 있다. 말하자면 노자는 상반 대립되거나 심지어 모순되는 양극단과 양극단 사이의 여러 관점을 동시에 인정하고 이를 전체적으로 종합하고자 하였던 것이고, 그래서 모순 관계마저도 역설로 활용하여 상반 대립되는 두 관점을 인정하면서 동시에 부정함으로써 종합성과 균형성을 갖춘 사고 체계를 지향해 갔던 것이다. 바로 이것이 노자 역설과 부정적 언사의 본질인데, 여기에는 이미 인간의 인식능력과 언어 그리고 우주 자연의 존재에 대한 노자의 관점과 인식이 전제되어 있었다.
