The problem of whether the world was eternal or created in time in medieval period originated from the interpretation of Aristotle's Physica in which he argues that the absolute beginning of motion cannot be explained. The eternity of the world is a valid conclusion following from upon the acceptance of the principles of Aristotelian physics. Nevertheless, the Christian revelation teaches that the created world began to be. This paper aims to focus on how Boethius Dacia deals with the problem in his De aeternitate mundi. In fact, there has been controversy whether Boethius's position is interpreted as a form of double truth theory or not. Despite their fundamentally different interpretations, there is at least some agreement among them about the definition of double truth theory. However, I will argue that another definition should be applied to Boethius’s position to correctly understand the double truth theory in question.

13-4세기 파리 대학을 중심으로 일어난 논쟁거리 가운데 세계의 영원성 문제는 운동의 절대적인 시작을 설명할 수 없기 때문에 세계는 시작이 없다는 아리스토텔레스의 『자연학』에 대한 해석에서 생겨났다. 만일 아리스토텔레스의 원리들을 받아들인다면 세계가 영원하다는 결론이 철학적으로 타당하게 도출된다고 주장할 수 있을 것이다. 반면, 그리스도교 신앙은 ‘무로부터의 창조’를 의심할 수 없는 진리로 받아들이는 한, 세계의 영원성을 부정해야 한다. 이 글은 13세기 대표적인 라틴 아베로에스주의자로 분류되는 보에티우스 다치아가 자신의 저서『세계의 영원성에 대하여』에서 어떤 입장을 취하는지에 주목한다. 기실 그 입장을 두고서 신앙의 영역과 철학의 영역 각각에서 서로 모순되는 결론을 모두 참이라고 주장하는 이중진리론의 옹호자로 보는 해석과 그렇지 않다고 보는 해석이 대립한다. 두 가지 해석은 서로 상반되지만 이중진리론을 이해하는 방식은 동일하다. 필자는 그 방식과는 다른 이해방식을 토대로 제 삼의 해석을 제안할 것이다.
