We have two seemingly conflicting intuitions on envy. One is that envy is not morally right and the other is that there are some cases where envy is morally justifiable. In this paper I shall deal with the problem of resolving these two intuitions. (I shall call this problem 'the problem of envy'). I start with analyzing the constituents of envy. One of my claims supported by this analysis is that the range of the envied does not have to be limited to the group of neighbors. Also I shall argue that there is ambivalence in envious persons' attitudes toward luck of the envied, which implies the moral dimensions of envy. This shows, I shall argue, that the strategy of solving the problem of envy by eliminating envy from the realm of moral emotions, which is adopted by Rawls and Ben-Ze'ev, is not successful.
