Though it is necessary that we have relations with natural, their contents are various and it is ethical matter that we should choose which contents of relations we have with natural. So in this point we should begin to discuss environmental ethics. Environmental ethics has been treated in environmental act ethics for long time. However, without explanation of virtuous traits be related to environment, as all ethical discuss is, any environmental ethics could not be perfect. I, first, discussed that certain traits are developed to the environmental virtue for clarifying the possibility of environmental virtue ethics. Second, I discussed that a benevolence as virtue can be applied in environmental realm, and that the trait as a benevolence is suitable to nature in general, and tried to answer about the special objections which could be happen to this view. Third, I argued there are two types of environmental virtue ethics, complement environmental virtue ethics and substituted environmental virtue ethics. I defended environmental virtue ethics which against objections which environmental virtue ethics has defects, lack of decision to do what we should do, that virtue sometimes has bad results, difficulty of discern between virtuous human and not virtuous human. I think it is proved that virtue ethical approaches in environmental ethics are possible and necessary through these discuss.

인간과 자연의 관계는 필수적이지만, 그 관계 내용은 다양하며, 어떤 내용의 관계를 맺을 것인지는 우리가 결정해야 할 윤리적인 문제이다. 여기에서 환경 윤리의 가능성을 엿볼 수 있다. 환경 윤리는 그 동안 환경 행위 윤리라고 불리는 관점에서 주로 논의되어 왔다. 그러나 모든 윤리적 탐구가 그러하듯이 환경 윤리에서도 환경과 관련한 성품에 관한 해명이 없이는 불완전한 상태에 머물러 있을 뿐이다. 환경 덕 윤리의 가능성을 타진하기 위하여 특정한 성품이 환경적 덕으로 확장 가능하다는 것을 먼저 논의하였다. 우리가 일반적 덕으로 알고 있는 ‘선의’가 환경 영역에서도 적용될 수 있는지, 즉 자연 일반에 선의를 갖는 성품이 가능한지를 살펴보고서, 이에 제기될 수 있는 반론들에 대해 살펴보았다. 이를 토대로 환경 덕 윤리가 설정된다면, 그 환경 덕 윤리가 어떤 유형으로 나타날 것인지도 논의하였다. 이 유형은 통상 덕 윤리학자들이 말하는 ‘보완적 견해’와 ‘대체 견해’로 구분해 보았다. 그리고 환경 덕 윤리에 제기 될 수 있는 비판, 즉 행위 결정력의 결여, 덕이 항상 좋은 결과를 갖지 않는다는 점, 유덕한 사람과 그렇지 않은 사람을 식별하기 어렵다는 점, 이 세 가지 문제점과 같은 비판에 해명을 시도하였다. 이 논의 전 과정을 통해 환경 윤리에 대한 덕 윤리적 관점이 개괄적으로 드러났다고 생각한다.
