Humanities therapy is an interdisciplinary study which has the aim of preventing and curing the problems related to mind, i.e., the disease of mind, in order to secure mental health and well-being. Because humanities therapy is a new-born discipline, it has to fulfill many academic components, especially the identity, and method. The purpose of the paper is to suggest an outline of humanities therapy paradigm. To do so, I shall discuss a way of securing the identity of humanities therapy and then of finding its basic components and methods. The identity of humanities therapy is discussed in comparison with those fields such as medical therapy, psychological therapy, and religious therapy which are related closely to humanities therapy. After discussing the identity problem, I shall suggest an outline of basic components of humanities therapy by using the Kuhn's notion of paradigm.

인문치료학은 마음과 관련된 문제들을 예방하고 치유하여 정신적 건강과 행복을 확보하기 위해 인문학 및 관련 분야들이 공동으로 참여하여 이론과 방법을 개발하는 분야이다. 신생 연구 분야로서 인문치료학이 학으로서의 뿌리를 내리기 위해서는 학문적 요소들을 구비해야 하는데 그 중에서도 특히 인문치료의 정체성, 목적, 방법 등이 규명되어야 한다. 이 글의 목적은 인문치료 패러다임의 윤곽을 제시함으로써 그러한 요청에 대답하는 데 있다. 우선 이 글은 인문치료의 정체성을 확보하는 방식을 검토하고 이어서 인문치료를 구성하는 기본 요소와 방법을 검토할 것이다. 인문치료의 정체성은 의학치료, 심리치료, 종교치료와 같은 인문치료와 밀접한 관계에 있는 분야들과의 비교를 통하여 분석된다. 인문치료의 정체성을 확보하는 방식을 논의한 이후에 과학 방법론에서 제시된 쿤의 패러다임 개념을 이용하여 인문치료 방법을 구성하는 요소와 방법을 구체적으로 검토할 것이다.
